Overview
The TORCA Youth Trail Crew members will work under the supervision of a Crew Leader on exciting projects on recreational trail networks in Terrace where TORCA holds partnership agreements and authorized trail maintenance permits. All work will take place on Terrace Mtn & Steinhoe Ridge and will conform to guidelines as defined in our partnership agreements with Recreation Sites & Trails and the City of Terrace. Best management practices that implement long-term sustainable trail solutions will help to protect the environment, improve safety of the trail network, while providing an an enjoyable trail experience for various trail users. improve the safety of the trail network, protect the environment, and provide an enjoyable trail experience for all trail users in order to benefit the health of the community.
Eligibility
This program is funded through the Federal Canada Summer Jobs program. All applicants must meet the following criteria:
- be between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;
- be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and
- be legally entitled to work according to the regulations of the Province of British Columbia with a valid Social Insurance Number
Note: International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are Canadian Citizens or permanent residents.
Responsibilities
This job requires strenuous physical demands on a daily basis, including hiking, lifting, digging, and striking.
Specific tasks include:
- Trail repair and maintenance following required trail standards set by land managers
- Trimming plant overgrowth along trail corridors
- Additional trail repair, maintenance, and construction activities under the direction of the Crew Leader or other TORCA Trail Builders
- Install and replace trail signs
Skills, Knowledge, Experience, Required Competencies:
- Your own transportation to trail networks / trail access points is required
- Ability to work collaboratively and to receive and follow direction with diverse groups of people
- Self-directed, requiring minimal supervision
- Ability to work outdoors in variety of weather conditions
- Trail building experience is not necessary, but an asset
- First aid certificate is an asset
The Terrace Off Road Cycling Association (TORCA) is a registered, non-profit, volunteer-run organization that primarily advocates for the interests of the local cycling community and positively contributes to the growth and sustainability of recreational cycling in the Terrace area. TORCA is the only formal, non-motorized trail advocacy group in Terrace and co-manages the two main trail networks in the Terrace area and an asphalt-surface pumptrack through land-use agreements with Recreation Site and Trails BC and the City of Terrace, respectively. Through strong advocacy, collaboration, and strong community relationships, TORCA has helped to foster common ground between user groups so all types of recreational users can enjoy the trail networks freely. With a focus on sustainable design and education and a strong emphasis on volunteerism (1000+ volunteer hours annually), trails managed by TORCA are constructed and maintained to a high standard.
